As we head into the summer, there’s lots of potential for some paw-some outdoor fun and playtime with your pup. However, it’s also very important to make sure that you’re prepared and know how to keep your dog cool. Fur-tunately, as one of Australia’s largest dog hotels, we’ve compiled a list of several measures you should take to keep your fur baby happy, healthy and cool this summer:
Cool areas
Can you imagine if you had to stay outdoors in the sun from morning to night on a hot Summer day? Doesn’t sound very nice, does it? Well, chances are that your doggo feels the same way. If you feel too hot then so does your dog. Make sure you bring your dog indoors to cooler temperatures and if you’re going to have your dog outdoors, make sure there are plenty of shaded areas for them to rest and get out of the sun. Just like humans, too much exposure to the sun will give your dog heat stroke.
Top tip: Short-nosed or flat-faced dog breeds like Pugs, English Bulldogs and French Bulldogs are more susceptible to heatstroke, so if you have one of these breeds of dog make sure to take extra care to keep them out of the sun.
Drinking water
When it comes to water for your pup, there’s no such thing as too much, especially on a hot day. Fill several large containers full of cool water for your dog to drink from. Add ice to the water to keep it cool and make sure to place the water in shaded areas so that your dog isn’t forced to go into the sun. You should also always leave multiple water sources around the house or garden for your dog in case one of them gets spilled.
Go for a dip
Keep your doggo paws-itively happy by giving them access to a shallow pool with cool water that they can chill out and cool down in. Get a small paddling pool or clamshell pool and place it in the shade somewhere that your dog has easy access to when they need it. Just make sure to supervise any young children who are playing around the pool.
Be careful with walking times
If the pavement is too hot when you walk your dog, it could cause serious damage to their paws. Stick to walking in the mornings and evenings as this is when the ground will be coolest. This is also when the temperatures will be lower, so your pup is less likely to become exhausted. If you live near a beach, river or creek you might want to take your dog for a walk in that direction as a dip in the water will give them the chance to cool off.
Top tip: A good way to judge if the pavement is too hot to walk your dog is by placing the palm of your hand on the ground for 5 seconds – if your hand becomes uncomfortable then it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.
Sunscreen
Did you know that ‘slip slop slap’ doesn’t just apply to humans? Often our dogs’ little pink snouts are easily sunburnt, so if you have a fair-skinned doggo, you’ll need to purchase a sunscreen designed specifically for the protection of animals. During the summer months, this will help to prevent discomfort, sunburn, sunstroke and skin cancer.
